Kurakani (informal discussion) with Sanjib Raj Bhandari and Kiran Joshi
On December 7, 2008 we had a good interaction with them and had a very meaningful exchange of ideas in an informal setting.
Sanjib is the first adopter of businesses in ICT sectors in Nepal. He is running very successful businesses like Mercantile, nepalnews.com and many others. He is a visionary and an entrepreneur. He has 25 years of experience founding businesses in Internet & Communications, IT, BPO, Infrastructure and Financial Services domains in Asia. (NepalNews.com, Mercantile etc)
Kiran has worked for Disney Animation in the past and is credited for many of those successful movies we have enjoyed. Currently he is running joint venture startups in US, Nepal and India. He has 22 years of experience in IT, Media and Content creation (17 years of creative leadership at Disney Animation).
Kiran shared his experience of establishing a startup in Nepal. He is passionate about doing the right thing despite odds of doing business in Nepal. He showed a demo of animation created in Animation lab in Nepal by Nepalese artists and developers.
Please click here to view the power point presentation by Sanjib during Kura Kani. (He has the vision of CAN-Nepal as well in this presntation).
Hi All, we are collecting names of individuals who would be
interested to teach a subject area of their interest in Nepal via
video-conferencing:
The idea of this knowledge transfer project is to establish a
knowledge exchange platform. The advancing technological resources
now available in Nepal and world-wide has made this possible.
Mercantile in Nepal has agreed to establish a technical infrastructure
(free of cost) for us to implement this program.
Very recently, Dr. Alok K Bohara, Professor at New Mexico University,
USA, presented his concept paper on ‘Co-operative Federal Structure
of New Nepal’ via video conference. He was in New Mexico and the
participants in Nepal. This was presented to Constituent Assembly
members, journalists and civil society representatives who are in the
process of writing a
new constitution of Nepal.
This same technology will be used to transfer other types of
knowledge (there is no limit to the potential) to Nepal from the
comfort of our homes here in the US or possibly other countries. If
it works for Nepal, we can expand it to other developing countries
too.
Time commitment : one time (unless specific requests are made from
Nepal for a repeat).
Hours - during the evenings (will try to set it up after 7 PM USA
time - irrespective of time zone).
Medium: Video Conferencing (the teachers will be outside Nepal,
Mercantile has offered infrastructure in Nepal).
Topic: Please send your background info (resume would be great and
what you would like to teach). We are not limited to any specific
topic.
The idea is to start a roster of qualified and willing people can
spend a couple of hours of their time from their home in the evening
teaching their area of expertise in Nepal.
Please forward this email to any other individual who might be
interested. You or they can contact us (Pukar, Bineet, Bijay) for
further information. Information will also be updated on: http://can-usa.org/
Our ideas are evolving please send any suggestions that you may have.
Now that we have decided (as per the meeting on 12.14.2008) to have some sort of CAN-USA conference during ANA-2009 it is time for us to brainstorm what kind of conference will be appropriate, engaging, and fruitful for us.The thought during last meeting was that this is a good opportunity to take advantage of ANA-2009 being held in Silicon Valley and CAN-USA should have a conference held during ANA 2009 where participants would be ‘WOWed’ by the display of technology and creativity.
CAN-USA has a history of publishing a bi-annual newsletter on Information and communications technologies issues pertaining to Nepal. You may see copies of the previous two newsletters at the CAN-USA website, www.can-usa.org.
The goal of the Newsletter is to highlight the issues surrounding ICT development in Nepal. The principal target of the newsletter are highly-skilled members of the American technology establishment as well as critical experts engaged in ICT efforts in Nepal.
As you are an ICT professional with specific understanding of the important issues affecting Nepal, we would like to encourage you to write an article for the next issue of the CAN-USA newsletter. The newsletter will be published in the late February 2009 timeframe.
If you are involved in a development effort based in Nepal this newsletter will be a wonderful opportunity to advertize your efforts to a skilled target audience.
Hello everyone.
I recently read in media that NEA has increased the load shedding hours from 7 to 10 hours and the upper level employee on NEA are saying its gonna be 16 hrs a day in next 3 months. I am sure you guys are aware of this.
Well I believe until Nepali people gets basic needs we will not be able to reach up to our goals which is to implement ICT in Nepal. Which is extremely dependent on power. So, my concern is why don’t we focus on this side as well.
We can look for alternate of hydro power for example electricity from windmill.
BKS: Conflict of Interest Policy to be adopted soon (email will be sent by BKS) and everyone need to sign.
Personal interest & CAN-USA: how do we manage conflict of interest?
How do we avoid legal complications (e.g. because of compensation, propriety issues) how do we help an entity’s market interest? How do we go after our vision
of social impact?
All: We agreed we will not endorse projects that are corporate affiliation.
BKS: But what about Mahabarji’s project?
All: For now CAN-USA will endorse non-profit projects only. Each case will be analyzed individually. But, individual and (for profit) corporate interests are tabled for now.
We will facilitate and provide networking opportunities for individuals and for profit corporations provided they become CAN-USA members.
Individual CAN-USA members and officials can promote any projects. Those members can mention that they are CAN-USA members as anyone can do.
PM: Pukar’s meeting with CAN-Nepal
-Vision-ICT development.
- Upcoming CAN-InfoTech 2009.
-Better (improved communicator between CAN and CAN-USA) –Do one CAN-USA meeting, every two month
SO: make it an open meetingso CAN members can join.so that CAN
members can joins as needed
BKS: Special thanks to Bijay ji for the meeting with Kiran Joshi (Disney Animation fame) & Sanjib Rajbhandari (Mercantile) and also for getting commitment from Sanji Rajbhandari to provide the infrastructure for transfer of knowledge remotely between CAN and CAN-USA.
SO: Cited Deepak Neopane as the volunteer who has helped ‘above and the beyond’ the community by organizing the financial Planning seminar. Also mentioned it is important to recognize such volunteers in yearly basis and proposed a ‘volunteer of the year award by CAN-USA”
BN: Sanjib and Kiran are looking for people to join their project. Further information will be forth. Coming
BKS:Need donation to pay for Lunch. On last week event (total cost $130.00)
BKS: Taking CAN.-USA to the next level?
-SO: set that will help people advance professionally can we get CAN more involved?
-BN: time is limited. Let’s get more organized. Eg. Hire people in Nepal.
-PD: what job description for that person in Nepal? Shall we think of just 2-month plan?
-PM: if we hire someone in US, can we pay for it? Even interns? We should think about paying people to make our vision realizable.
BKS: ANA Convention: Should we have CAN-USA conference at ANA 2009?
BN Something wow-connection with Nepal-something existing. Tele conference.
SO: What is ANA expecting from CAN_USA?
SO: Concern about negative publicity of CAN-USA due to mismanaging of ANA.
PM: Can request a media contact person from ANA just like we had for CAN-USA ANA is looking for CAN USA leadership. We can be instrumental in
having the technological theme here.
ANA and CAN-USA could have combined project in the conference.
BKS: Let us brainstorm on what and how in our next meeting.
an event during the main ANA event. Conduct a career fair.
ALL: Conclusion, yes, let us have CAN-USA conference during ANA 2009.
