2nd Annual ICT Development Conference

July 3-4, 2009, ANA Convention

Oakland Marriot Convention Center

BackgroundAbout CAN-USA’s vision

CAN-USA is a non-profit US organization born on July 29th 2007 and is dedicated to professional development of its members and technological progress of Nepal. Its members include Nepali and American professionals.

About ICT conference

Annual ICT Conference aims to bringing together the ICT professionals to share their knowledge and experience and to reach a broader recommendation for the development of ICT infrastructure in Nepal.   This also serves as a platform to showcase the ongoing advancement of the Nepali ICT sector as well as responsible public efforts while seeking to engage American partners.

We successfully completed the Inaugural US-Nepal Technology Development Conference, held on July 12-13th, 2008 at the University of California at Berkeley.  The conference assembled leading world researchers, members of private industry, and the Nepali Diaspora on the topics of: telemedicine, rural connectivity, e-governance, and emergency telecommunications infrastructure pertinent to challenges faced by Nepal, assessed the present state of Nepal’s technological development, promoted successful efforts, and provided networking opportunities.  His Excellency, Ambassador of the Republic of Nepal to the United States, Dr. Suresh Chalise, provided the opening remarks for this conference.

2nd Annual ICT Development ConferenceVision

Nepalis in the ICT community have already reached a critical mass in the US.  Silicon Valley is the technology hub of the US.  Opportunely, we plan to showcase the talents of Nepali diaspora while facilitating professional networking.  Moreover, we plan to connect in more action-oriented terms with the ICT development in Nepal.

We realize this as a significant opportunity for CAN-USA to leverage its knowledge and experience towards a high-impact high-visibility ICT conference.  Similarly, we look forward to remarkably furthering the culture of professional development during ANA conventions.

Plan

The theme for the conference will broadly be ‘Technology and Entrepreneurship.’  The conference will be held July 4-5, marked with two series of 3-hour program.   Each program will be divided into 3 events, 1-hour each.  Some of these sessions could include:

  1. Tips for starting and managing successfully high-tech startup

A professional high-tech consultant will teach a 45-minute course, followed by Q/A, on starting and running a high-tech startup successfully.

  1. Career Management

We will talk about various challenges and opportunities as you walk from college towards high level of professional success.

  1. State of Technology in Nepal

We will develop a better understanding of the state of technology in Nepal (e.g. the Internet backbone presentation by NTC, E-governance, E-commerce)

  1. Contracting opportunities with US government and International Development Agencies

We will learn about various opportunities in the US government and development organizations such as World Bank and UN and means to get to them.

  1. Professional Brainstorming

We will have poster and/or PowerPoint presentations from entrepreneurs in the US who own or lead the keys ideas in their companies, especially startups

The 2nd Annual ICT Development Conference will help CAN-USA enable networking for the IT professionals in US and Nepal and contribute directly towards development opportunities in Nepal.  At the same time, the conference will strengthen the professional development platform that ANA convention provides.

CAN-USA Annual Conference during ANA-2009

Now that we have decided (as per the meeting on 12.14.2008) to have some sort of CAN-USA conference during ANA-2009 it is time for us to brainstorm what kind of conference will be appropriate, engaging, and fruitful for us.  The thought during last meeting was that this is a good opportunity to take advantage of ANA-2009 being held in Silicon Valley and CAN-USA should have a conference held during ANA 2009 where participants would be ‘WOWed’ by the display of technology and creativity.

Few pointers to ponder are:

  • Academic vs. Industrial Conference
  • Conference items/themes:

  1.       Development?
  2.       Green?
  3.       Global warming?
  4.       Technology transfer?
  5.       Entrepreneurship?
  6.       Career fair
  7.       All of above

Please give your input …
