The American Society of Nepalese Engineers (ASNEngr) and Computer Association of Nepal-USA (CAN-USA) held their first ever joint Annual Conference  on July 03^rd and 04^th, 2010  at Park Plaza Hotel & Towers, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. with the 2010 Association of Nepalis in Americas (ANA) Convention.  For both organizations, this was their 3^rd annual conference. The theme of this conference was “Engineering and Science for Sustainability, Clean-Technology and Disaster Preparedness”.  The conference provided a common venue for the engineers, scientists, and related professionals to discuss on relevant topics like Earthquake Disaster Preparedness and Clean Technology while promoting further collaborative efforts. The conference included three technical sessions.
 
The conference kicked off on Saturday July 3^rd with Ramesh B. Malla, Ph.D., President of ASNEngr and  Pukar Malla, Ph.D.,  Vice-President of CAN-USA giving opening remarks and introductory presentations on behalf of their respective organizations. In the same program, CAN-USA announced its annual Volunteer of the Year awards. This year, the award recipients were Kanhaiya Kayastha,S.E., P.E., La Habra, CA and Nisha Thapa, San Francisco, CA. Mr. Rajan Pant, Controller of the Office of Controller of Certification in Kathmandu, handed out the awards. Dr. Malla received the awards on behalf of Mr. Kayastha and Ms. Thapa. Following the opening program, the session chairs  Pramod Dhakal, Ph.D. and Jagannath Ghimire, P.E., started the first technical session titled “Panel Discussion on Earthquake Disaster Preparedness in Nepal.” During this session, Dr. Ramesh B. Malla, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT presented on "On Preparing Nepal’s Infrastructures for Earthquake Event" which was co-authored by Dr. Malla and Mr. Kanhaiya Kayastha. Mr. Rajan R. Pant stressed on the cooperation needed among various entities in the event of a disaster. The topic of his presentation was “Cooperation for Disaster Preparedness: A case for Nepal”.
 
The 2^nd day, Sunday July 4^th, started with a technical session entitled “Clean Technology” which was chaired by Dr. Upendra Karna. This session had a total of four presentations on subject matters related to Clean Technology such as: “Energy Generation using Reciprocating Small Scale Hydropower System” by Dr. Ramesh B. Malla co-authored by Dr. Malla, Binu Shrestha and Dr. Amvrossios C. Bagtzoglou, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT; “Stoves, Health and Technologies” (a webinar presentation) by Dr. Amod Pokhrel, University of California, Berkeley, CA; “High altitude Wireless networks in Himalayan Region” by Mr. Kishor Panth, CAN, Kathmandu, Nepal; and “Got Sun? Get Electricity!- Gham Power’s Solar PV Systems End Load-Shedding for Homes and Businesses Alike” (a webinar presentation) by Sandeep Giri, Gham Power, Kathmandu, Nepal.
 
The 2^nd and final day of the conference ended with the third technical session focused on General Engineering and Scientific Topics. This session was chaired by Dr. Ramesh B. Malla and Mr. Kishor Panth. There were four presentations on diverse topics such as: “Science and Education for a Sustainable World” by Dr. Pramod Dhakal, Canada Foundation for Nepal, Ottawa, Canada; “Meta Analysis on Gene Expression Micro-array data” by Mr. Pujan Joshi, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT; “Search and Rescue using Cell Phones and Mobile Base Station” by Mr. Bishal Thapa, Northeastern University, Boston, MA; and "Bridge Foundation Design in Tidal Waterway" by. Upendra Karna, Dr. Eng, P.E., U&S Engineers, P.C., Lambertville, NJ.
